Watersports

With such a fantastic beach, it is inevitable that watersports are a popular activity in Exmouth, and it could quite justifiably class itself as the UK’s number one centre for watersports activities. With a huge range of activities available there really is no better place in the UK to indulge in these exciting sports.

This fact is borne out by the fact Exmouth has produced a number of world champions and Olympians, including Steph Bridge, who has won the World Kite surfing Championship three times and Olympic sailors Joe Glanfield and Ben Rhodes. There are a number of centres in Exmouth, including Edge Watersports and Liquid Watersports offering the chance to have a go at a range of activities including:

Kite Surfing

Combining the best aspects of windsurfing, wakeboarding, paragliding and surfing, Kite surfing is a hugely exciting sport where you harness the power of the wind with a large kite which then propels you at speed across the water. For those people who would rather stay on dry land, kites are available to hire on the beach.

Jet Skiing

A jet ski is a small scooter like vehicle that skims across the water. Very easy to learn how to use, they can reach speeds of over 60mph and are hugely enjoyable and exciting to ride.

Windsurfing

Like a cross between surfing and sailing, windsurfing is a popular sport in Exmouth. With more experienced windsurfers often reaching speeds of over 30mph, windsurfing is a great way to get the adrenaline pumping.

Paddle Boarding – Stand Up Paddle Boarding is one of the world’s fastest growing watersports. To put it simply, it is the act of standing up on a surfboard and paddling out into the sea with a one bladed paddle. Whether it’s the invigorating experience of paddling out through the stormy surf, or simply gently paddling along the Jurassic Coast, Paddle Boarding is a fun sport that can be enjoyed by a wide range of people.

As well the more modern watersports, sailing is hugely popular in Exmouth, and this can be seen by its beautiful 200 berth marina. Due to its setting in the NW corner of Lyme Bay, it allows sailors year-round sailing on the Exe estuary, with other harbours within easy reach. For those people who would like to learn to sail, Sail Exmouth is a local company that offers Royal Yachting Association accredited training on a variety of vessels.
